One glove does not suffice for shagging nowadays. Before he sprinted to the outfield on Saturday afternoon, George Springer stepped down into the first-base dugout and grabbed another. He fit his five right fingers into the rubber blue medical glove, put his baseball mitt on his left hand and went to work.
A light first day of summer workouts on Friday gave way to a heavier day on Saturday for the Astros, one that showcased the various safety protocols in place to try and keep the regular season viable amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Springer, Michael Brantley and Josh Reddick — the team’s presumed starting outfield — all wore medical gloves on their throwing hands while running down fly balls during batting practice, an attempt to limit the amount of commonly touched surfaces.
After each day of workouts, the batch of baseballs used for batting practice is disinfected and not permitted for reuse for at least five days. Infielders used their bare hands to throw during their drills, but those baseballs came from a different bag.
Both Alex Bregman and Yuli Gurriel took infield while wearing black masks. Players are not required to wear masks on the field, but some around the league still choose to do so. Reddick wore a mask briefly in the outfield, too, but removed it after a few minutes.
The team watched a video about social distancing after the workout, too, according to manager Dusty Baker. Educational courses about the virus are part of Major League Baseball’s operations manual, one that includes a list of prohibited habits that these longtime ballplayers could struggle to break.
“They have to realize that, ‘Hey man, we’re all in this together, and if we’re going to have a season, have a life ... if we’re going to make it to the fall and through the fall and into the winter, we’re going to have to adhere to whatever rules are out there,” Baker said.
