Will the Browns try to sign LB Clay Matthews III? Hey, Mary Kay! - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- In this midweek edition of my Browns mailbag, I answer questions about Clay Matthews, Jadeveon Clowney, Rashard Higgins and more.

Hey, Mary Kay: Why wouldn’t we sign Clay Matthews III as a situational player to help spark the D with obvious his links to Cleveland? — Michael Boore, Cleveland, Ohio

Hey, Michael: Matthews, 33, had a productive season with the Rams last year, and would definitely be worth exploring. In 13 starts on the edge, he had eight sacks, two forced fumbles and three passes defensed. He’s versatile enough to play inside or out, and would immediately challenge for a starting position. What’s more, the Browns could probably get him at a bargain basement price, and I’m sure he’d love to play where his father Clay Jr. produced a Hall-of-Fame caliber career. Browns GM Andrew Berry has said he’ll aggressively look to add more talent, and this is one veteran — and six-time Pro Bowler — he should definitely explore. The Browns could also use Matthews’ excellent leadership and mentorship on defense.

Hey, Mary Kay: Will Rashard Higgins have a good shot at the Browns’ third wide receiver spot? — Kevin Y., Seattle

Hey, Kevin: I actually do think Higgins will have a good chance to play that role even though the Browns waited so long to bring him back. Higgins has an advantage over rookie Donovan Peoples-Jones in that he already has good chemistry with Baker Mayfield. With the possibility of no in-person offseason program or minicamps, a newcomer such as Peoples-Jones, the Browns’ sixth-round pick out of Michigan, won’t have a chance to get those much-needed reps with Mayfield.

With Jarvis Landry recovering from hip surgery, there will probably be more opportunities for the backups to get reps in training camp — providing there is one — so they can get their timing down that way, but Higgins has the edge there. Having said that, Kevin Stefanski ran three wides only 25% of the time in Minnesota last year, so the third receiver won’t get much playing time. Besides, it will often be Kareem Hunt, who can create mismatches by lining up anywhere and posing a threat in the running and passing games.

Hey, Mary Kay: What’s the word on Jadeveon Clowney? Any chance for the Browns? — @TerrellB11

Hey, @TerrellB11: He’s been on the radar this offseason, and as long as he’s still out there, the door isn’t closed. It could be a money issue at this point. He’s been seeking about $17 million a year, and apparently the Browns don’t want to pay him that much. If the price comes down, perhaps their interest will get piqued again. As for now, Andrew Berry has said Olivier Vernon will be a key part of the team, and he also signed edge-rusher Adrian Clayborn.

Hey, Mary Kay: Is Kevin Stefanski’s two tight end offense and a fullback going to be too old fashioned for the modern high-flying NFL? — Greg Sopko, Cleveland

Hey, Greg: Stefanski’s offense finished eighth in the NFL in points per game last year and 10th in yards per play, so it’s not too old-fashioned by any stretch. Quarterback Kirk Cousins finished fourth in the NFL with a 107.4 rating and threw for 3,600 yards. The scheme, implemented last year by Gary Kubiak, is proven and explosive. Stefanski has all the weapons he needs to add new wrinkles, but the two-tight end scheme, used 57% of the time last year, helped lead to a 10-6 record and playoff berth.

Hey, Mary Kay: I understand the Andrew Berry said he would be aggressive during free agency and the draft. Don’t you think that we’re going to need a stud linebacker via trade or even somebody like Jadeveon Clowney so our D-Line can dominate and maybe less expose how young and inexperienced we are at the linebacker position? Doesn’t Berry have to take in account the Ravens got a lot better and we have to play them twice a year with the offense they have? — Jeffrey Lerner, Avon, Ohio

Hey, Jeffrey: As mentioned above, I would explore signing Matthews, and would revisit Clowney if the price comes down. I do think the Browns could use at least one more impact player on defense, one that can help inject some new life into the unit. I think second-round safety Grant Delpit will bring some much-needed swagger to the D, but they could use another good, veteran leader and tone setter.

Hey, Mary Kay: Do you think the Browns will offer Larry Ogunjobi a contract extension now that they drafted Jordan Elliott? — Steven C., Beavercreek, Ohio

Hey, Steven: I do think the Browns will try to extend Ogunjobi’s contract despite the addition of Jordan Elliott and Andrew Billings. They’re investing a lot in their defensive line, and Ogunjobi is a good, young player. Andrew Berry helped draft him in 2017, and believes in him. I think they’re hoping Elliott evolves into a starter like Ogunjobi did in his second season.
