STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The city was prepared for a crowd at public parks Saturday: in anticipation of a sunny day with temperatures in the 70s, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea announced more than 1,000 extra patrol officers would be enforcing social distancing, and Mayor Bill de Blasio sped the launch of the ‘Open Streets’ project, closing seven miles of park roadways for pedestrian and cyclist use.

On Staten Island, that meant the official closure of the through-road in Silver Lake Park -- although the road has already been largely closed for pedestrian use in recent weeks.

The point was reinforced with a sign on a closed gate blocking the road that reads: "ROAD CLOSED to create more space for solitary activities in your park."
