Mother and daughter nurses from the same Long Island hospital both caught the coronavirus — and on Saturday, their colleagues surprised them with an early Mother’s Day “drive-by” thank you.
Staff at the Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital drove by the home of mom Luz Naranjo, 61 — who is still recovering — on Saturday afternoon.
They brought signs of support, confetti and even performed a lawn-side dance to express their love.
“I’m just so happy she gets to see them — even if it’s just for a few seconds. She misses them and they miss her,” said Naranjo’s daughter, Catherine, 24, who also works at the Valley Stream hospital.
Luz was intubated for 10 days with the virus in late March and has been at home recovering since. Her entire family had become sick with the bug after Catherine first contracted the virus in mid-March while working at the hospital.
At that point, the coronavirus testing was not conducted on site, and Catherine said she ended up infecting her parents, brother and sister as she awaited the results over the course of about two weeks.
The Naranjos are grateful Luz is on the path to recovery after the health scare and were appreciative of all the support from the hospital.
“We were devastated — sad to say that we thought the worst,” Catherine said when the family heard of Luz’s intubation.
“And from there we just needed prayers. And everyone in the LIJ Valley Stream community called me and said they’re here for us and that they were praying for us, and we never felt alone during that whole process.”
