ND bars try to drink up sales with help of new ordinances - INFORUM

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, general manager Dillon Juve is still getting used to having a shorter staff and a taller workload.

"Every day's kind of its own little adventure as she's been going here, so all the old rules are kind of out the window," he said.

Meanwhile, in West Fargo, Kurt Lepird, the owner of Silver Dollar Bar & Grill, is doing it all: Managing, cooking and being an owner.

In a typical week, he also has to deal with fewer hands.

"We're usually just running two persons per shift, plus myself to help out in the kitchen or anywhere else needed," Lepird said.

Once Fargo and West Fargo both passed city ordinances allowing establishments to sell beer with food, both bars have seen an upward trend in business.

But for Juve, the number of people paying for drinks depends on the day.

"I wouldn't say it's a large amount of sales, but I would say it is enough to help put the margin in the right direction," he said.

In Lepird's case, he's seen about 15% of customers pay for take-home beer in an average week.

"I think this is kind of a staple of America," he said. "People are used to that."

Whether or not you decide to get booze with your next takeout meal, Juve said going the extra mile and getting the drink can go a long way.

"Food's awesome, but at the end of the day just being able to get that extra dollar amount onto the sale to keep everything kind of rolling has been great," he said.

Per city ordinances, Fargo bars are allowed to sell beer and wine until April 23, while West Fargo bars can go until April 27, since West Fargo signed its ordinance on a later date.

In Grand Forks, bars are also allowed to sell alcohol with takeout and delivery until April 23.
