"People aren't looking, they're not thinking about buying a car right now, there are other things that are obviously more important," McAreavy says.
According to Bloomberg, Market Researchers at J.D. Power saw car sales fall 38% short of its expectations through mid-March. This was prior to Governor Cuomo’s “New York State on PAUSE” executive order went into effect.
Cars still break down and leases still end, though, so dealers remain open. They are, however, under tight safety guidelines outlined by the New York State Automobile Dealers Association. For starters, showrooms are closed, as almost the entire car buying process has to take place away from the dealership until it's time to buy. This goes double for test drives. McAreavy says that once it comes time for someone to buy, sales departments operate with “clean rooms.”
(NYSADA has set up a coronavirus resource page for both dealers and employees, which can be viewed here.)
For dealers, McAreavy says they have to work with customers at the same time as they work deals with car lenders and their own employees. He says the current situation is challenging for a business which relies on in-person interaction.
“It's very disruptive to the normal process and so it's having an impact for sure," he says.
McAreavy says manufacturers are trying to sweeten the pot with better incentive offers on cars, at least while the situation continues. As for just how long that is, he says it's unknown. The long-term hope is that customers will return to lots once the pandemic is over.
"People will react to it, they'll find a way to do things they need to do, and they'll do it in a way that they're comfortable doing it."
News10NBC has reached out to NYSADA for comment on statewide sales, we are waiting to hear back.
