Teams, fans try to process tournament postponement - WV MetroNews - West Virginia MetroNews

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Fans exiting the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center Thursday afternoon were wondering if there would be any more high school basketball games in West Virginia this season.

They said they were trying to understand the impact of the announcement by Gov. Jim Justice and the Secondary Schools Activities Commission that the girls tournament was being suspended at next week’s boys tournament postponed because of the risks caused by the coronavirus.

Some who had made the trip to Charleston didn’t want to go home.

“I don’t think it’s right,” North Marion fan Brian Shelosky told MetroNews. “There’s not even a confirmed case in the state and we’re not going to play basketball but we’re going to send the kids to school tomorrow? That doesn’t make sense.”

Shelosky said he could understand if there were confirmed coronavirus cases. He said at the very minimum the tournament should have played out without fans in the building.

“Let ’em play,” he said. “Our girls have worked hard all year long to be number-1 and now all of the sudden it’s for nothing.”

You could read the disappointment on the face of Parkersburg head coach Scott Cozzens. He was having lunch with his girls when he heard the news. He came back to the Coliseum to get more information.

“I understand both sides, I really do,” Cozzens said. “I understand the pressure that’s going on around us. Heaven forbid if something would happen to one of these young ladies down here.”

The Big Reds had an opportunity to claim their third straight AAA crown. They won their opening round game Wednesday.

“I feel bad for my girls. In the (1980s) they (PHS) had a three-peat and these seniors came in talking about matching that and they are so close. They’ve worked so hard,” Cozzens said.

The plans are for the Big Reds to return home, resume practice and wait on the SSAC’s final decision about the resumption of the tournament. Cozzens said he did have some players with other sports obligations which he would allow them to fulfill.

Cozzens had his doubts the tournament would pick back up.

“The way this virus is progressing, in two weeks or three weeks it’s going to be worse than it is now so I don’t see this thing being played at all,” Cozzens said.

Shelosky is holding out hope but admitted there’s a narrow window.

“I mean, I would hope there would be something in the future but how long are they going to wait?”

Also at issue is where the tournaments would be played. The Coliseum and Convention Center’s Board of Directors voted Thursday to cancel all events for the next month that were anticipating crowds numbering more than 250 people.
