Saturday was a day of disappointment, frustration and a small degree of understanding what is happening.
It was also in the 40s and windy with occasional snow and hail, in short, baseball weather in Northern Nevada.
After the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association announced on Friday that all high school spring sports would be suspended, due to precautions being taken for the coronavirus and the disease Covid-19, teams were allowed to play one more game on Saturday.
Some Northern Nevada softball teams were already in Las Vegas for tournaments, so the NIAA said all teams could play Saturday.
It was the last day of prep sports, for awhile. Teams are also not allowed to practice or use school facilities while the suspension is in effect. Schools are off for the two-week spring break through March 29.
If it is the last day for a while, the Reno baseball team will have to try to maintain its hot start (7-0) over the first two weeks of the season. The Huskies kept it going with a 9-3 win over Spanish Springs on Saturday.
With 15 seniors on the team, this is the last time they will be teammates and they have been relishing the opportunity, which is now on hiatus.
After Saturday's game, the Reno and Spanish Springs players and coaches said they will have to figure out how to deal with the unprecedented interruption.
Reno coach Pete Savage said he thinks it will be a temporary suspension, but said the health and safety of people is the primary concern.
"Our seniors certainly deserve a chance to finish their season," Savage said. "In a week or two weeks things will be re-evaluated. I know the NIAA wants to give our kids a chance to finish. Not just our kids, but the entire league, and every league at every level."
He told his players to stay prepared and stay healthy and be ready for when the season re-starts.
"We just have to keep the faith and believe in the decision makers that they will give us a chance," he said.
Sports leagues have been suspended nationwide, at every level from the NBA, MLB and NHL to the PGA and throughout the college and high school ranks.
Savage said sports are an integral part of American society.
"It gives people joy and it gives them an opportunity to compete," he said.
Reno senior Coleman Schmidt said the players are trying to stay positive. They view the suspension as adversity they have to deal with.
He said the plan is to stay ready physically for when the season returns.
Reno senior Skylar Hales allowed four hits in Reno's 9-3 win Saturday.
He is trying to look for any positives about the season being suspended.
"Even though we might be off for a while, we'll find a way to get better. Always just looking to the next day," Hales said. "We can always get better and we're just looking forward to (the season) continuing later on. This is out of cour control, so we've just got to keep our heads down and working hard."
He said the thought that Saturday's game could be the last one for awhile did not enter his mind while he was pitching.
"I thought, it's just another game, just like every other one," he said.
Reno senior catcher Lane Oliphant said the thought the season could be suspended started to enter his mind when all the pro and college leagues started cancelling theirs earlier in the week.
He will approach the next few weeks like the offseason, mostly by doing conditioning drills, and be ready if they re-start the season.
Oliphant said the season being postponed and not cancelled gives him hope.
"You see the other leagues being cancelled and see all those seniors with no hope left. At least we have some hope," he said. "We're going to take this time, fix swings, get everything ready to go. We'll be ready to go."
Oliphant, Schmidt and Hales have played baseball together since they were 7 years old.
Spanish Springs junior Jace Avina said the season being suspended is a big disappointment.
"Especially for our seniors, this might be their last game to play," Avina said. "It's very sad."
Spanish Springs coach Matt Ortiz said that while liability is a concern, the players -- and especially the seniors -- are the ones taking the brunt of the decision.
He told the players to run and throw and go to a gym if possible during the suspension.
"You don't want anyone to get hurt if they all of a sudden say in two weeks that we're back on," Ortiz said. "You've got to be ready."
Many local teams were hoping to play in Las Vegas tournaments after out-of-state trips were cancelled last week.
But Las Vegas shut down the season before Northern Nevada.
McQueen coach Spencer Downie has been expecting this could be a breakout year for the Lancers, with a lot of experience coming back and an ace pitcher in sophomore Robbie Snelling.
"We've got a good team and I really don't want it to get cancelled, but it's out of our control," Downie said.
Most of his seniors are three-year varsity players.
Snelling had five strikeouts and allowed six hits in four innings in the Lancers 8-7 win over Damonte Ranch on Thursday. Damonte junior Mathew Sigafoos had six strikeouts and allowed five hits in five innings.
McQueen beat Carson, 17-7 on Saturday.
Also Saturday, Galena beat Wooster, 17-0 and Douglas beat Reed, 13-10.
On Thursday, Galena's Nolan Craddock had a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over Carson. Also Thursday, Spanish Springs beat Douglas 3-2, Reed beat Manogue, 3-1, and Reno beat Wooster 14-0.
- In softball Saturday, McQueen beat North Torrance, 7-0 as Rylie Miller had seven strikeouts and Makalya Weber drove in two runs. McQueen lost to Aquinas earlier Saturday, 8-1.
Spanish Springs lost two games Saturday, 7-2 to Clovis, and 9-7 to Mission Viejo.
On Friday Spanish Springs beat Lehi, 5-2, as Hailey Mclean had nine strikeouts and Carissa Andrews had two hits.
- There was also one track and field meet held Saturday at Spanish Springs. The Spanish Springs boys won with 132 points, followed by Hug with 32 and Carson with 8. The Spanish Springs girls won with 121 points and Hug was second with 21.
