The Northeast of the United States reported its warmest October on record for the period of 1895 to 2021, according to averages from the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University.
The average temperature across the Northeast was 55.9 degrees, which is 5.7 degrees higher than normal.
Additionally, Massachusetts had its second warmest October, recording an average of 56.2 degrees, 5.2 degrees higher than normal. The coolest October on record in Massachusetts was 43.4 degrees in 1925 and the highest was 57.5 degrees in 2017.
Meanwhile, Maryland experienced its warmest October, while Delaware, Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island also had their second warmest October. All remaining states in the region had their third warmest October, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center.
As far as cities go, Boston reported its 4th warmest October on record and Worcester reported its 11th warmest. Outside of the commonwealth, six of the Northeast’s 35 major climate sites had their warmest October on record: Syracuse, New York, Dulles Airport, Virginia, Newark, New Jersey, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Williamsport, Pennsylvania and Scranton, Pennsylvania.
The average temperatures for most areas ranged from 4 degrees to 8 degrees above normal, according to the climate center.
Furthermore, the second half of October was much wetter than normal. For example, 16 of the climate sites ranked October among their 20 wettest on record. Locally, Worcester reported its 12th wettest October in station history.
Fall foliage in Massachusetts was delayed and less vibrant due to the warmer and wetter temperatures. The exact timing of when leaves change and how vibrant the colors are is impacted by temperature and precipitation. As precipitation continued into the fall, plants continued to grow and therefore couldn’t participate in the necessary drying to make their colors change.
The Northeast of the country is warming faster than the rest of the contiguous U.S., with clear impacts in not only the record-breaking temperatures this October, but also the record-breaking temperatures and precipitation last summer.
Nationwide, last month was the 6th warmest October on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
