Baltimore Orioles first baseman/designated hitter Trey Mancini had a cancer scare for two weeks in June, worrying that his Stage 3 colon cancer had returned, he told The Athletic in an exclusive.
After undergoing a regular bloodwork test, Mancini received a message on June 21 that said a carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) test showed an elevation above normal. This could indicate the presence of cancer cells or a tumor.
Mancini missed the 2020 season after he received a cancer diagnosis that March, had surgery and underwent six months of chemotherapy before returning to the Orioles in 2021.
After receiving the message about his CEA test, he contacted his oncologist, who told him not to worry and that he just needed another test to confirm he was cancer-free.
"Me, overthinking it, I just couldn't wrap my head around the fact that my CEA was normal for quite a few times, and now it's elevated," he told The Athletic. "I was thinking the worst. And I couldn't shake that."
On July 4 — two weeks after receiving the CEA test results — Mancini's test results for a Circulating Tumor DNA test came back negative. No cancer cells were detected.
It's not a coincidence that Mancini's numbers jumped in July. After the clean test, he recorded hits in 15 of his next 16 games and batted .299 for the month. He participated in MLB's annual Home Run Derby on July 12 during All-Star Game festivities, finishing second and bringing his story of perseverance to a larger audience.
