Fired state medical director or immunizations Dr. Michelle “Shelley” Fiscus shot back at a Department of Safety report showing she had a muzzle sent to her office days before she was terminated by the Department of Health.
“They obviously set up a false account, a fake account with her name and her address,” Brad Fiscus, her husband, said Monday.
Fiscus’ husband wasn’t sure whether they would file any type of complaint against the state and declined to say whether it was an “inside job.” He noted they need to obtain more information and talk to their attorney before making a decision.
The Amazon account was set up with what appears to be a burner phone using a T-Mobile account, he said, noting all of their accounts are with Verizon. Fiscus also said the muzzle was ordered on July 1 when they were traveling to Indiana.
Dr. Fiscus said Monday she was made aware of a Department of Safety and Homeland Security report Monday when it was shared with her by Axios Nashville, a new online publication that reported the state’s investigation found she purchased the muzzle.
Shortly after being fired, Fiscus said the muzzle was sent to her as a threat to keep her from talking to the media.
According to the Axios article, the investigation determined “the results of this investigation showed that purchases from both Amazon accounts were charged to the same American Express credit card in the name of Dr. Michelle D. Fiscus.” Account information Fiscus provided to investigators was different from the one used to buy the muzzle, Axios reported.
The former state immunologist was fired July 12 after conservative lawmakers raised concerns about a memo she sent to “vaccine partners” notifying them about the state’s mature minor doctrine, which allows those under 18 to receive medical care such as vaccines without parental consent in some instances. She also took the brunt of blame for Department of Health website messaging that encouraged minors to get COVID-19 vaccines.
Fiscus then lobbed bombshells at Health Department Commissioner Lisa Piercey and Gov. Bill Lee, saying she was made the scapegoat for complaints lawmakers made about the state’s vaccination program.
The former state immunologist said in a statement she requested Homeland Security obtain a subpoena to look at details about the Amazon account that ordered the muzzle because Amazon refused to release them. It was sent to her office July 3, more than a week before she was fired.
“We have now learned that a second Amazon account had been established under my name using what appears to be a temporary phone, possibly in Washington state,” Fiscus said in a statement. She said she asked Homeland Security for an unredacted copy of the report so she can investigate the matter further.
The Fiscuses also want to know how the AmEx card was accessed without approval. Her husband pointed out she previously made purchases on her state computer using the AmEx card, which would have enabled someone to obtain the card’s information.
Fiscus’ husband said they didn’t find out the report existed until 30 minutes before Axios posted the article. The initial article said the Fiscuses wanted to review the report and declined to comment. The article was updated later.
“Obviously, it was done to make us look bad and damage her credibility,” Brad Fiscus said of the incident.
He noted he wants to know the timing of the purchase, claiming it had to be done by someone who knew she was probably going to be fired in a few days.
