Now it’s time to emerge and try out our wings - OCRegister

Well, here we are emerging from the COVID-19 shutdown.

Restaurants are opening their doors to welcome us to inside dining, masks are being removed in outdoor environments, and life seems to be getting back to normal.

But maybe not. After more than a year of being sheltered, maybe we have changed and normal is not the same as it was.

Do you remember when the migration of the painted ladies butterflies came through the Village? Thousands of butterflies had emerged from their cocoons and were headed where their deep inner awareness led them.

While they were in the cocoons, tremendous internal changes took place. The caterpillars that had spent their lives crawling on the ground had become something vastly different.

When a butterfly emerges, it remains near the cocoon and waits until its new wings are dry and strong enough for it to fly.

Thousands of people are emerging from the shutdown period at the same time. Thousands of people will be trying out their wings and figuring out how to fly. We may be uneasy to move quickly back into all the activity in which we were engaged before we spent so much time alone.

The experience of having the freedom to go where we want and the way we want may seem unfamiliar to us. We may not be afraid of getting sick but may feel as if we are entering into a whole new experience of the world.

Will we feel more bonded to each other, more generous, more willing to understand? Our whole world has been through this experience together.

Author John Powell wrote in his book “The Secret of Staying in Love”: “It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the mirror of another loving, caring human being.”

We are like the thousands of painted ladies emerging from our cocoons at the same time. Let’s see the beauty in each other. Let’s reflect that beauty into the world.
