It’s a holiday weekend for all of us here at Bleacher Nation, so you’ll forgive the late Enhanced Box Score for today’s loss to the Reds. In the meantime, another Cub, Trevor Williams, is going to miss some time.
What else is new?
Trevor Williams had an appendectomy Sunday morning and will miss tomorrow's start. Starter to open the Padres series is TBD. Not sure how long he'll miss.

Williams, coming off his best start (by game score) since last August, had an appendectomy today and will miss tomorrow’s start. That makes him the 13th injured Cubs player at the moment (not all are on the IL), from the rotation, to the bullpen, to the starting lineup, to the bench, to the backup catcher spot.
And this doesn’t even include the fact that Willson Contreras took a 99 MPH heater off his wrist a week ago (he’s apparently fine, but still …).
The Cubs now have 13 players currently injured:
Williams (appendix)
Rizzo (back)
Bote (shoulder)
Duffy (back)
Hoerner (hamstring)
Heyward (hamstring)
Marisnick (hamstring)
Mills (back)
Steele (hamstring)
Megill (forearm)
Romine (wrist)
Holder (shoulder)
Wick (oblique)— Tony Andracki (@TonyAndracki23) May 30, 2021
So now what? Well, it’s hard to say. On the one hand, appendectomies are not terrible serious procedures medically speaking, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be ready to re-take the mound immediately. Frankly, I don’t really know how much of an impact that will have on his availability, let alone his productivity.
Either way, he’ll likely hit the Injured List (it can be retroactive to three days ago), and the Cubs will need a fill-in starter for tomorrow’s opener against the Padres (TBD at the moment).
The good news is that Kohl Stewart is on the 40-man roster and has been on the same schedule as Williams, so he’s my guess for the start tomorrow. He’s not the only option, though. Alec Mills, who last pitched on May 28th in Iowa, is also on the 40-man roster and could be part of a bullpen day type start if that’s the way the Cubs want to go. He last pitched on the 28th, though. So he might be less of a full-start option. I suppose Keegan Thompson is another option, but I suspect the Cubs prefer to keep him rolling in the bullpen, where he’s been successful.
Long story short, Williams is going to be out for a little while (at least) and tomorrow’s starter is up in the air.
