Oklahoma City Thunder wing Lu Dort is hoping to take his improvement to the Olympic level.

He said after the game against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday that he plans to try out for Team Canada and play in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

“I’m looking to try out and try to make the team for this summer, and to compete and to qualify for the Olympics,” he said.

The men’s FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments are scheduled to run from June 29 to July 4. The Olympics will be held from July 23 to Aug. 8.

Dort has made a leap this season, turning from a defensive-minded rookie into an emerging two-way player. He has taken a heavier load offensively, particularly since Shai Gilgeous-Alexander suffered a foot injury, and joined Thunder offensive record books.

He became the sixth Oklahoma City player to reach 40 points in a game when he faced the Utah Jazz on April 13, and in the game on Sunday against the Raptors, he became the seventh Thunder player to score 20 points in a single quarter.

Dort may play with a couple of those Raptors on the Canadian Olympic team. He grew up in Montreal, the same city as Toronto bigs Chris Boucher and Khem Birch.

“Montreal is still an underdog city, and we have so much talent there,” Dort said after that game. “There’s so many kids coming up, and I feel like there’s going to be so many more NBA players from Montreal.”

They’ll get a chance to display that come the qualifiers.
