Topline

Members of the British royal family raised “concerns and conversations” about the color of her son Archie’s skin tone while she was pregnant with him, Meghan Markle told Oprah Winfrey during an unprecedented sit-down interview Sunday.

Key Facts

During the bombshell CBS interview, Meghan, who is half white and half Black, said palace officials talked to Harry during Meghan’s pregnancy with son Archie about how “dark his skin might be when he’s born,” and “what that would mean or look like.”

“At the time it was awkward. I was a bit shocked,” Harry said, and added discussions about their future children’s skin tone began even before the two were married.

The conversations were between Harry and members of his family, they said, although the couple refused to name them: “That would be very damaging to them,” Meghan said.

Harry vowed he would “never” share who he talked to or elaborate further on the conversations.

The talks about their future children's’ skin tone occurred simultaneously with palace discussions about Archie and any potential siblings not being granted royal titles and security, Meghan and Harry said.

Meghan noted it was upsetting to her that the first person of color born into the British royal family would not have the titles and security typically afforded to members in their position.

Tangent

Meghan also addressed rumors that Meghan made her sister-in-law Kate Middleton cry, as was alleged in British tabloids about six months after her 2018 wedding to Harry. Meghan alleged that it happened the other way around, and that Kate made her cry on the day of her wedding to Harry after a quarrel over flower girl dresses. “It was a really hard week before the wedding ... She owned it and she apologized and brought me flowers and a note,” Meghan said, but refrained from elaborating. “I don’t think it’s fair to get into the details of that ... she apologized and I’ve forgiven her.”

Key Background

The sit-down with Winfrey is the first interview the Sussexes have done as a couple since stepping back as senior working members of the royal family a year ago. The week leading up to the interview saw high tensions between Harry and Meghan and Buckingham Palace. On Wednesday, Buckingham Palace announced it would investigate a report in London newspaper the Times that Megan bullied Kensington Palace staff, an allegation Meghan called “an attack on her character” and denied.
