The Kansas City Chiefs continue to meet with prospects ahead of the 2021 NFL draft, this time checking in on a prospect from the Kansas Jayhawks.

Kansas RB Pooka Williams, Jr. spoke with reporters for 15 minutes following his Pro Day on Friday. He told reporters that he had some pre-draft talks with the Cheifs according to KC Star beat writer Herbie Teope. Williams did say, however, that the team, “didn’t really talk too long.”

Remember, these pre-draft chats make up for the types of things that the team misses without events like the 2021 NFL Scouting Combine. What Williams described, well, it sounds a lot like what would have amounted to an informal interview at the combine. These are just quick information-gathering chats, usually by an area scout or an assistant coach.

Williams is one of the more intriguing prospects at the running back position in this draft class. He opted out of the 2020 college football season after playing in four games, recording 51 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns. In each of the two seasons prior, Williams was a 1000-yard rusher for the Jayhawks.

Williams is known as a patient and shifty rusher with the ability to start and stop on a dime. There are legitimate concerns about his size (5-9 and 175 pounds at his Pro Day weigh-in) and whether he’ll be able to hold up in the NFL game. He definitely has the speed to be effective at the next level, clocking a 4.38 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.

The best move for Williams might be to make the switch to slot receiver. He was even asked to do several receiver drills at his Pro Day. He told reporters that he ran the go and post routes. He also was asked to do some punt return drills too. He returned 18 kicks at Kansas, but he never returned a punt while he was there.
