The mayor of a West Texas town said Tuesday that he had already resigned after he was widely condemned for writing on Facebook that people suffering in the cold without power shouldn’t look to their local governments for help.
Tim Boyd, who was mayor of Colorado City, made his original, typo-ridden post Tuesday morning, writing that “no one owes you are your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! … The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!”
Boyd continued at length, saying that he was “sick and tired” of people looking for handouts and that the current situation is “sadly a product of a socialist government.”
“Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish,” he wrote.
The post is no longer available, but numerous screenshots show it and a follow-up post he made several hours later in which he said he stood by the sentiments in his first missive but would have either kept his mouth shut or phrased his message better if he could do things over.
“I would never want to hurt the elderly or anyone that is in true need of help to be left to fend for themselves,” Boyd said. “I was only making the statement that those folks that are too lazy to get up and fend for themselves but are capable should not be dealt a handout.”
He apologized for the original post’s wording but said that the harassment his family had received as a result was uncalled for.
Boyd also wrote that he had already turned in his resignation as the mayor of Colorado City, a town of 4,000 people about 230 miles west of Dallas, and was speaking only as a citizen, not an elected official. It was unclear when exactly he had resigned; a City Council agenda posted on the city’s website showed that he was scheduled to lead last week’s meeting.
Data from Oncor Electric Delivery, which serves about 4,400 customers in Colorado City’s ZIP code, showed that 1,304 of them were without power at 9 p.m. Tuesday. The temperature was 23 degrees.
