The Cheshire School District and one teacher are breathing a sigh of relief this weekend after it was announced that her positive COVID-19 test was false.
Superintendent of Schools Jeff Solan, in an email to parents on Friday, explained that the rapid test of a Cheshire teacher that had delievered a positive result was proven to have been a false positive, and the educator in fact does not have COVID-19.
“Subsequent testing and consultation between the Chesprocott Health District and the Department of Public Health has determined that the initial positive rapid response test was not accurate. Most importantly, the teacher is not sick, but she and the rest of us are a bit shaken from this experience,” said Solan, in the email.
Last week, the District announced that it had received word of two possible COVID-19 cases in the School System—one teacher who had tested positive for the virus and an administrator who was experiencing symptoms and was awaiting the results of their own test. As a result, Solan required all educators and administrators at Cheshire High and Dodd Middle School to work from home for the week.
It was later announced that the administrator had tested negative.
With news of the false positive test, the District currently has no educators or administrators who have a confirmed case of COVID-19.
Cheshire schools will open this coming week to students for the first time since March 13. There will be three orientation days before classes officially begin on Friday, Sept. 11.
“We will kick off school on Tuesday morning with our first orientation day,” said Solan, in his email. “Things will go wrong. Things went wrong on the first day of school pre-COVID too. We will learn from these challenges and improve as students, parents, and educators every day. This is all we can do at this point. We, as a school system, aspire to be a little bit better every day. The starting line has dramatically shifted, but the goal hasn't changed. The return to school in these conditions will be trying, but only make us stronger.”
