Port-style and fortified wines have become the darling of Arizona winemakers, who are embracing this traditional cold-weather after-dinner sipper.

From ruby styles with bold floral fruit and spice to tawny styles that spend 7-30 years in the barrel oxidizing and developing, port-style wines come in a range of styles offering something for almost any wine drinker.

If you're looking to give an Arizona-made port-style or fortified wine to try, here are 7 options worth seeking out.

Caduceus Cellars, NV Helio Dolce Dessert ($44)

This luscious party of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petite syrah and malvasia bianca pushes smells and tastes of raspberry torte, fresh dates or maple toffee. It likes to hang out with chocolate or blue cheese.

LDV Winery, 2012 The Epilogue ($24)

This 100% petite sirah was produced with half the residual sugar remaining than most dessert wines. Not syrupy, its tobacco, toast and berries nose leads to a rush of dark fruit on the palate followed by a sweet and savory caramel and spice note finish. Enjoy with chocolate, blueberries and cream, bleu cheese or your favorite cigar.

Alcantara Vineyards, 2016 X-Port ($36.95)

A combination of petit sirah and zinfandel, this award-winner boasts rich rum raisin aromas and full-bodied sweet cherry and red currant notes.

Callaghan Vineyards, NV Red Dessert Wine ($20)

This grenache-petite syrah blend is floral with strawberry and cherry jam sweetness and an acid tannin backbone. Dark chocolate is its ideal mate.

Chateau Tumbleweed, 2013 Fort Stinkbeast ($30)

An irrigation system failure at the vineyard block where the winery gets its fruit led to winemaker Joe Bechard to try using what was salvageable to make a port-style wine. During fermentation, the grapes infused the cellar with “a strong aroma bordering on cough syrup.” This led to everyone affectionately calling it “the Stinkbeast.” With a lot of TLC in the years that followed, including additional fortification with brandy distilled from nearby D.A. Ranch Vineyards’ tannat, the intensity subdued and evolved into more delicate characters of ripe plums and berries, chocolate and baking spices. Try it with flourless chocolate cake.

Dos Cabezas WineWorks, NV Boxcar ($35)

This solera-style wine is a blend of mostly tempranillo, petite sirah and mourvedre. It’s known for its brown sugar, molasses and toasted nut profile. It’s sold out at the winery, but more will be bottled this fall. In the meantime, sister winery Garage-East offers a 2010 version.

Heart Wood Cellars, NV Ruby Reserve ($40 for 500ml bottle)

Petite sirah and tannat come together in this medal winner. Although sold out, look for the winemakers to break into their library and put some of their 2017 Diamond ($40), a white port-style, on the market. There’s also a NV Romance rosé port-style ($40).
