FAIRFIELD, CT — More than 90 percent of electric customers in Fairfield had power early Sunday. But five days after Tropical Storm Isaias brought widespread damage and outages to town, 7 percent of customers were still in the dark.
As of about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, 1,787 United Illuminating Co. customers in Fairfield had no power, according to the company, an improvement compared to the 25 percent that had been powerless roughly 24 hours earlier. The number of customers experiencing an outage peaked above 60 percent in the wake of the storm Tuesday before holding steady around 50 percent for about two days.
UI had estimated Friday that almost all town residents would have electricity by Saturday night, but in an email Saturday to residents, First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick discussed challenges the company had encountered in Fairfield.
The town had more outage events that any other community in the area, she said. The National Guard was providing assistance Friday in Fairfield. Damage at the Hawthorn Substation was worse than initially thought and its system needed to be reworked. Much of the company's efforts in town involved rebuilding — which takes longer than repairing — due to the extent of the damage.
In addition, UI reported frustrated residents were aggressive with utility workers, slowing their progress.
"I hope our community will allow the UI and DPW workers to do their work uninterrupted so we can all get back online soon," Kupchick said in the email.
About 500 homes in smaller outage areas were projected to remain without power until as late as Tuesday, Kupchick said in Friday's email to residents.
