Celebration takeout: Right now is the perfect time to try 5 top Dallas restaurants at home - The Dallas Morning News

Beginning in ancient times when maypole festivals marked the start of the month, May has been a time for celebrations. In May, we observe Mother’s Day, school graduations, even the drinker’s holiday Cinco de Mayo. And as the start of peak wedding season, many will celebrate anniversaries.

Usually, this would be a time for preparing in advance to secure a table in a fancy dining room. But as restaurants can seat only a quarter of their capacity and many patrons still feeling hesitant to return at the risk of contracting or spreading the coronavirus, festivities will likely look different this year.

The good news is that you can still enjoy chef-created meals from hot spots that were once nearly impossible to get into. In fact, many of Dallas’ most sought-after reservations ― like Homewood, which received a four-star review from The Dallas Morning News last July, and Petra and Beast, helmed by celebrated chef Misti Norris ― remain focused solely on takeout programs for now, while other favorites like Billy Can Can will reopen dining rooms soon but continue to offer to-go for those who aren’t yet ready for dine-in.

For whenever the time comes to uncork that special bottle and perhaps break out the china for a celebration in the safety of your home, here are some of Dallas’ best places to get a delectable takeout feast worthy of momentarily forgetting the news and raising a glass, whether it’s a special occasion or not.

Petra and the Beast

Last year, after Misti Norris’ small East Dallas restaurant Petra and the Beast was announced as a James Beard semifinalist for Best New Restaurant and included in Bon Appetit’s top 50 nominees for the same designation, getting a table on a weekend required planning several months out. But thanks to her takeout pivot, what is sure to be the most painstakingly crafted charcuterie in Dallas is currently available for pickup.

A trained butcher and an avid forager, Norris’ cured “meatums” have as many layered tasting profiles as an extremely expensive bottle of Burgundy wine. The $37 sample includes six rotating meats with jam, pickled mushrooms, and the most potent mustard we’ve had this side of the Atlantic. Entrees change every week and include dishes like this week’s torn gnocchi with pig tail ragout, topped with curls of summer squash and caramelized zucchini. For a small gathering, get an entire spread of Norris’ boundless creativity by pre-ordering “Take Home the Beast,” a family style dinner that feeds 2-4 for $95 or 4-6 for $175. See the website for ordering and pick-up instructions.

Homewood

Matt McCallister advanced the farm-to-table movement in Dallas over a decade ago when Stephan Pyles hired him as the executive chef of his now-closed eponymous restaurant in 2009. McCallister’s obsession with farm-sourced ingredients lives on today, as demonstrated by the hakurei turnip that’s tattooed around his neck as well as the menu at his newest restaurant, Homewood, where he’s focusing on takeout for now. When ordering from the sophisticated but homey menu, be sure to include the Parker House rolls with cultured butter. There’s a reason everyone can’t stop talking about them. And also be sure to include a dessert from pastry chef Maggie Huff, who was unjustly sidestepped as a James Beard finalist this year. Those who order by the end of the day on May 7 can really make Mom feel special with a three-course dinner that includes four “most exceptional sides” and strawberry pound cake for $65 per person. They also offer a farmers box of produce and meat from local farmers.

Georgie

The $390 Australian wagyu ribeye from Georgie by Curtis Stone is not on the curbside and delivery menu that’s been combined with Stephan Courseau’s two other restaurants — the French bistro Le Bilboquet and upscale American restaurant Up on Knox. The new consolidated delivery-friendly menu takes into consideration the group’s most popular dishes, including Le Bilboquet’s cold poached salmon with tabbouleh and dill sauce ($18) and Georgie’s rotisserie chicken dinner for two ($29). The most expensive entree for now? A 40-ounce bone-in ribeye from Creekstone Farms that’s been dry-aged for 90 days ($160). Bottles of wine have been reduced by a whole 60 percent, and delivery is available for addresses within 2 miles of Travis Walk. Additionally, for Mother’s Day, a three course pre-fixe menu is available for $50 per person. The dining room named as one of the 11 most beautiful restaurants in America will reopen when “it’s safe for staff and patrons, maybe after May 18,” according to Georgie’s general manager, Jared Givens.

Mot Hai Ba

Two previous restaurant critics at The Dallas Morning News hailed chef Peja Krstic’s French-Vietnamese Mot Hai Ba as one of the city’s best restaurants, and almost everyone knows the restaurant’s garlic noodles, shaking beef, and off-menu bowl of pho as among the best things to be acquired in Old East Dallas and Victory Park. Just as Krstic excels in the dining room that’s closed for now, he has exceeded expectations with his curbside pick up and delivery program. The revamped menu includes new “Fam Style” items with sides, like whole branzino and coal roasted brisket, as well as traditional favorites like the banana flower salad. From now until 9 p.m. on May 8, they’re taking pre-orders for Mother’s Day brunch. It’s an affordable banquet that comes with six sides and one entree choice of curry lime fried chicken, a Chubby Dog Farm pork roast, or A Bar N Ranch wagyu meatloaf. It ends with chocolate and strawberry brioche bread pudding and is only $65 for two or $110 for four. Email mothaibadallas@gmail.com to order.

Billy Can Can

This weekend is the last chance to take advantage of swanky Victory Park saloon Billy Can Can’s three-course dinners for pick-up or Caviar delivery. While they will continue with a la carte to-go options after reopening the dining room with its massive pecan wood bar on May 12, we have enjoyed executive chef Matt Ford’s $35-$45 coursed dinners that change daily Thursday through Saturday. Starters like strawberry panzanella, a Tuscan chopped salad that’s customarily made with tomatoes and soaked bread, is on Friday’s menu. Main course decisions will be made from choices of crab ravioli, hot fried quail, or maybe a long-bone pork chop. For dessert, select between generous slices of berry crisp or Texas sheet cake. They’ll also offer a more elaborate three-course Mother’s Day pre-fixe with shared sides and starters for $50 per person. High quality yet affordable wines are available as well, like Dallas-based vintner Rob Barney’s Stressed Vines Rosé from Santa Lucia Highlands ($16) or a Sangiovese “Super Texan” from Texas Hill Country’s Flat Creek Estate ($26).
