Most players may have treated the Pro Bowl like a vacation, an opportunity to unwind and relax after a strong season. Peyton Manning used the trip to Hawaii very differently. It was his chance to get a leg up on the competition.
The future Hall of Fame quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion befriended opponents and took them out drinking, hoping to gain valuable intel, according to former Patriot Ty Law, a Hall of Fame cornerback.
“Peyton would try to get you … once you get over to the Pro Bowl, you’re on the same team, Peyton try to get you drunk and then try to dig into your brain,” Law said in an interview on WEEI in Boston. “He feeds you all these damn mai tais. He would keep feeding all you those, butter you up, and ask you what you see and this and that.”
Law played for the Patriots from 1995-2004, which included the early stages of their Tom Brady-led dynasty. The road to the Super Bowl went through Manning’s Colts in those years. Law said he was too savvy to fall for Manning’s Pro Bowl antics.
“I was like, Peyton I’m not falling for that,” he said.
