Upstate NY cities invoke curfews to try and curb coronavirus pandemic - newyorkupstate.com

Three Upstate New York cities have begun curfews to try and get people to comply with social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Press Republican reports that the mayor of the City of Plattsburgh has put into place a nightly curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. where residents are to stay inside, except for activities involving basic needs which include getting food, going to and from work, and individual or family outdoor exercise.

The penalty for being outside not doing one of those activities? Plattsburgh City Mayor Colin Read said he hoped City Police would enforce the new measures via “a lot of warnings.”

Residents are also encouraged to wear a mask of any kind.

This curfew order in the City of Plattsburgh does not however affect the Town of Plattsburgh that surrounds it. The town’s supervisor is encouraging everyone to stay home, but the town is not under curfew.

For the City of Binghamton, the curfew began on March 17. Mayor Richard C. David declared that during this curfew, all residents will be required to remain in their homes from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. except for emergencies, medical or grocery store travel or if they are required to work by their employer.

Mayor David said this will allow Binghamton Police Department to more effectively enforce the rules of social distancing in a city that has a large college-aged population.

In Hornell, a curfew has been put into place, but it only affects individuals 17-years-old or younger, according to WETM 18 News. The order states that anyone 17-years-old or younger must be inside between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian or going to and from work. Any violation will be subject to a fine not to exceed $250.00.

More than 86,000 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in New York state. Over 216,000 have been infected nationwide, and over 5,000 have died in the U.S.
