When you’re not sure about a restaurant you’re reluctant to make the investment. But if you could get a bargain, wouldn’t you give a new place a try?
That’s why OC Restaurant Week — Sunday, March 8 through Saturday, March 14 — is the best time to check out places you’ve never been. This year there are more than 150 participating eateries so you’re bound to find something you’re dying to try. Multi-course fixed price menus for lunch will be offered for $10, $15, $20 or $25. Dinners are $20, $30, $40 or $50. For those willing to splurge, some chefs will present a “luxe experience” for $80 per person.
Many restaurants will also add on a cocktail at no extra charge. And if you’re into your drinks, be sure to try specialty cocktails for $12 that celebrate OC Restaurant Week’s 12th year.
You can find all the menus online but here are a few dishes that sound especially tasty. At Five Crowns in Newport Beach, Executive Chef Alejandra Padillla will serve Beet and Truffle Gnocchi with brown butter, hazelnuts and Manchego cheese as just one course on its $50 dinner menu. At Farmhouse in Newport, Chef Rich Mead will roll out a Strawberry Shortcake dessert with cornmeal thyme biscuit, sweet cream and blood orange sauce as part of another multicourse dinner menu ($50).
For those who like it hot, there’s a whole guide to some special menus. Don’t miss these spicy creations: Skyloft OC’s Spicy Vodka Rita with Ketel One, triple sec, lime juice, agave, muddled cucumber, jalapeños and a tajin rim; Descanso’s Carnitas Tacos with Habanero Salsa; and Great Maple’s Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich with napa cabbage slaw and hot sauce aioli.
Pamela Waitt, president of the OC Restaurant Association, invites everyone to the opening party on Saturday, March 7. General admission is sold out but VIP tickets for $100 per person are still available.
Waitt hopes the samples and nibbles from participating restaurants at the opening event will entice event-goers to dine throughout the week. “I am so proud to see how OC Restaurant Week has grown in the past 12 years to become Orange County’s most treasured culinary event,” she said. “It feels good to support so many talented chefs and businesses in our community.”
