Hello, friends.
They are not all going to be fun days on the way between now and the Orioles rebuilding project reaching a better phase. We can all remember that, especially when there are games like last night to remind us. There was not much that was fun about it - all the worse since the disappointing loss involved a pitching prospect we’ve had hopes about for multiple seasons, Zac Lowther, getting bombed in his first MLB start.
If you’re looking for the not-so-lovely totals of the 11-6 loss, check out Stacey’s recap. The game involved Pat Valaika getting to pitch, so, you know. There are probably not going to be many good outcomes for the Orioles that involve that scenario.
That is going to be part of the reality of the rebuild, too. Some of the players we’ve gotten invested in over the years aren’t going to end up working out. There’s no cause for panic just because Lowther had a bad game. There will be bumps along the way even for the ones who do work out. We can hope that he’s learned something and will be able to apply it in the future. Until then, the rebuild is a rebuild.
Another young pitcher gets a crack at the Red Sox today. That’s Dean Kremer. We’ve already seen a bit of Kremer this year and last, and it hasn’t been great for him up to this point either. Kremer sits with a 5.67 ERA through nine big league starts. This does not mean he is a failure, either, but it is harder to hand-wave the distance between here and a better future as long as pitchers like Kremer are on the struggle bus. And in the meantime, there are minor league box scores to excite us, also hopefully.
A win would be nice because beating the Red Sox is nice. Avoiding three-game losing streaks is also nice. And winning for the moms of Birdland would be nice as well. There was one rather infamous Mother’s Day game against the Red Sox that need not be mentioned beyond this allusion. At least the moms who go to today’s game will get a nice scarf whatever happens.

Today in 1987, Eddie Murray homered from both sides of the plate for a second consecutive game. This had never happened before in MLB history. The Orioles won both games, 7-6 and 15-6, beating the White Sox.
There are a few former Orioles who were born on this day. They are: 2018-19 infielder Jace Peterson, 1979 six-gamer Tom Chism, and 1984 twelve-gamer Ron Jackson. Today is Jackson’s 68th birthday, so an extra happy birthday to him.
