The Panthers’ head coach didn’t expect that his team wouldn’t have the top gymnasts together again until the regular-season finale.
Despite having their best lineup for only three meets, the Panthers put together another successful season by going 3-7 in dual meets while surpassing a 120 for a team average.
The Panthers opened the season with losses to Perham (137.10-122.80), Detroit Lakes (130.05-118.85) and Moorhead (125.525-120.10) before defeating Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville (119.95-97.10). After losses to Little Falls (128.925-116.075) and Detroit Lakes (136-35-120.85), Park Rapids defeated Morris Area (120.70-117.85) and LPGE/B (111.575-101.55). The Panthers closed out the regular season with losses to Perham (142.175-121.075) and Fergus Falls (132.80-124.80).
At the Section 8A meet, the Panthers finished sixth with a 126.225 as Perham repeated as section champs with a 143.975. Melrose (143.15), Detroit Lakes (141.00), Fergus Falls (134.025) and Little Falls (127.15) followed. Rounding out the eight-team section standings were Morris Area with a 118.825 and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville with a 103.95. Perham (No. 6 with a 143.413 average), Melrose (No. 7 with a 142.825 average), Detroit Lakes (No. 11 with a 138.90 average) and Fergus Falls (No. 22 with a 134.488 average) were all rated in the final state Class A poll.
Eleven gymnasts competed on varsity for the Panthers this season. That group featured senior Abby Kirlin; junior Ally Holmer; sophomores Natalie Backmann, Morgan Koppelman and Halle Landstrom; and eighth graders Emma Berghuis, Natalie Berghuis, Shailyn Hayes, Erica Johnson, Rachel Ulvin and Laney Vrieze. Only Koppelman competed in all 11 meets.
Kirlin, Landstrom, Koppelman, Holmer, Emma Berghuis, Natalie Berghuis, Hayes and Johnson capped off the season by competing at the section meet.
Landstrom finished ninth on balance beam, 13th in floor exercise, 20th in vault and 24th on uneven parallel bars to place 10th in all-around. Koppelman was 15th in all-around after placing 20th in floor, 21st on bars, 25th on beam and 28th in vault. Kirlin was 26th in vault and 31st on beam. Holmer placed 26th on bars. Emma Berghuis finished 16th in vault, 30th in floor and 33rd on bars. Natalie Berghuis placed 34th in vault. Hayes took 23rd in floor and 27th on beam. Johnson finished 28th on bars, 32nd on beam and 34th in floor.
In 11 meets, Koppelman posted a 32.39 all-around average with a high of 33.40. Koppelman had averages of 8.53 in floor (with a high of 8.85), 8.47 in vault (with a high of 8.70), 8.05 on beam (with a high of 8.95) and 7.30 on bars (with a high of 7.675).
Landstrom had the team’s highest all-around average of 32.86 in four meets with a high of 33.45. Landstrom had an 8.69 average in five meets in floor (with a high of 9.025), an 8.52 average on beam in four meets (with a high of 8.65), an 8.37 average in vault in five meets (with a high of 8.5) and a 7.26 average on bars in four meets (with a high of 7.65).
Kirlin competed in six meets in vault with an 8.45 average and a high of 8.60 and on beam with a 6.40 average and a high of 7.00 while adding a 7.40 average and a high of 7.60 in three meets in floor.
Holmer competed in nine meets on bars, posting a 6.68 average with a high of 7.05. Holmer also had a 6.01 average in five meets on beam (with a high of 7.00) and a 6.98 average in two meets in floor (with a high of 7.00).
Emma Berghuis had an 8.57 average in nine meets in vault (with a high of 8.95) and a 7.54 average in nine meets in floor (with a high of 7.85). Berghuis added averages of 6.54 on beam in four meets (with a high of 7.00) and 5.14 on bars in five meets (with a high of 5.40) and was an all-around competitor in three meets with a 27.55 average and a high of 28.05.
Natalie Berghuis was a member of the vault team in nine meets, posting an 8.18 average and a high of 8.65. Berghuis also had a 7.18 average in two meets on beam with a high of 7.35 while adding scores of 7.45 in floor and 4.80 on bars.
Johnson competed in nine meets on bars with a 6.19 average and a high of 7.25 and seven meets in floor with an average of 7.39 and a high of 7.80. Johnson also had a 7.93 average in three meets in vault (with a high of 8.05) and a 6.95 average in two meets on beam (with a high of 7.00) while adding a 28.60 all-around score in one meet.
Backmann was a member of the bars team in the first 10 meets, finishing with an average of 5.39 and a high of 6.00. Backmann also had averages of 7.88 in two meets in vault (with a high of 8.00), 7.33 in floor in four meets (with a high of 7.45) and 6.60 on beam in seven meets (with a high of 7.65) while posting a 26.40 all-around score in one meet.
Ulvin competed in three meets in vault with a 7.80 average and a high of 7.85, two meets on bars with a 5.25 average and a high of 5.35 and two meets in floor with an average of 6.90 and a high of 7.00. Ulvin also had a 6.175 on beam and an all-around score of 26.375 in one meet.
Vrieze competed in the first two meets of the season on bars with a 5.60 average and a high of 5.70 while posting a 8.20 in one meet in vault.
Even though the Panthers will miss the contributions of Kirlin, the rest of the team will return in hopes of moving up in the section team standings and contending for individual state berths.
