Okay, what is up with beloved aughts shows returning with teaser trailers that last less than a minute? First, we got the briefest of glimpses into Carrie Bradshaw's grown-up world in the Sex and the City reboot trailer, and now Friends is returning for an HBO Max reunion special in similarly truncated form. Watch the trailer for yourself below, then scroll down for a list of everything that came into my head as I watched it (and please, I'm begging you to mentally congratulate me for not making a Chandler Bing-style "Could I be any more [x]?" joke in this copy):
- Interesting use of darkness here.
- So they're just...walking away?
- Literally, this whole teaser is just the six Friends, arms linked around each other's waists, walking away from the camera?
- Well...okay.
- You know what we don't talk about enough? Matt LeBlanc's flawless portrayal of a slightly ruder, cruder version of himself on the Showtime series Episodes.
- Ditto Lisa Kudrow, who gave the performance of her career on HBO's The Comeback. (No offense intended to Phoebe Buffay.)
- Where's Matthew Perry's self-referential dramedy? I'd love to get to know him in a non-Friends, non-Sorkin capacity.
- That sounded weirdly flirtatious, I realize.
- Doesn't it seem sort of insane that despite COVID-19 and the entire entertainment world—actually, the entire real world—shutting down, we're still getting the long-promised, not-yet-seen Friends reunion?
- I should note that I am a lifelong Friends fan who can't wait for May 27.
- That said, Scaachi Koul's 2019 reevaluation of the show is definitely worth reading.
- Monica and Chandler's kids would now be roughly Gen Z-aged, which means I would stake my life on the reunion including plenty of references to TikTok and Olivia Rodrigo.
- Actually, I'm pretty sure they can't afford to reference Olivia Rodrigo, given what the Friends cast is reportedly being paid for the reunion.
- Should I rewatch the one where Phoebe finds a thumb in her can of soda? It might hit differently in a post-shrimp-in-cereal world.
- Okay, I have officially been thinking about this teaser for longer than its total runtime. Get here quick, May 27!
