Brandon Belt had COVID-19, mono; might not be ready for Opening Day - NBC Sports Chicago

Giants first baseman Brandon Belt had one heck of an offseason.

Offseason surgery in mid-October to have a bone spur removed from his right heel ended up becoming the least of his worries.

In the midst of rehab from that, Belt got sick -- twice. He told reporters on Saturday in Scottsdale, Ariz. that he tested positive for COVID-19 and also caught mono.

“I got [coronavirus] back in January and honestly I didn’t even know I had it,” Belt said. “I just know I had been exposed. I didn’t have any symptoms at first until he reached the end of my quarantine. When I was working out, I started feeling really winded, really light-headed, really dizzy and lost all energy after about 10 minutes of working out.”

Three weeks later, he got mono.

“A few weeks ago I got mono and it hit me pretty hard,” Belt said “I was pretty much in bed for about seven or eight days.”

“Then once I got over the sickness part, it was pretty tough to get over the weakness that my body had -- just lack of stamina, lack of energy, lack of strength -- I’ve been dealing with that for the last couple of weeks,” Belt added.

“All that came together and I got hit pretty hard.”

But the 2016 All-Star is feeling a lot better, and certainly looked better when he took on-field batting practice on Friday.

“The good news is now I feel pretty dang good and every couple of days I’m taking huge jumps forward. I feel like I’m pretty close to getting back to normal,” Belt said.

Belt was a little worried his comeback from the heel surgery would be impacted.

“All of this going on, I was pretty concerned with how the heel was going to react as well, but honestly it’s been going great," Belt said. "I haven’t been able to get out there and do a lot of things that I wanted to do over a couple of weeks.”

Now it’s about building up stamina and strength.

As far as where Belt will be come Opening Day, he’s not sure.

“I don’t know. It’s hard to say," Belt said. “I don’t know if I expected to be on time, I was going to try to be on time for Opening Day, but I didn’t know if that was going to happen or not. I’m still kind of in the same situation. I don’t know if I’ll make it to Opening Day, but I’m going to try my hardest to get there and if I’m a couple weeks late, then that’s just what it’ll have to be.”
