Syracuse, N.Y. -- Twelve Onondaga County residents died of Covid-19 since Friday, the second highest daily death toll since the pandemic began, County Executive Ryan McMahon announced today.
“We have had a crushing day,’' McMahon said on Twitter.
The county has already recorded 108 deaths in December, making it the deadliest month from Covid-19 since the pandemic began. The next worst month was May, with 104 deaths.
With hundreds of new cases of coronavirus continuing to pile up daily, high numbers of patients are landing in hospitals with serious complications from the virus.
The county confirmed 447 new coronavirus cases today, the second highest daily total since March. Thirty-seven of the new cases were in senior living facilities, which house some of the most vulnerable patients.
There are 308 coronavirus patients in local hospitals today. That’s down 20 from the high point Friday, making it the second highest number of hospitalized patients. Fifty-four the patients are in intensive care.
Of the 12 most recent deaths, nine occurred in hospitals. They included four men -- ages 74, 66, 62 and 57 -- and five women -- ages 96, 83, 82, 82 and 79. County officials did not have demographic information about the other three victims, who died at nursing homes.
“This is a very difficult day and tough to find anything positive,’' McMahon tweeted. “Tomorrow will be a better day,’' he added.
Citing the risk of death or serious illness to frail patients, public health officials have pleaded with the public to curtail social gatherings during the holiday season. Much of the current surge in cases has been attributed to get-togethers over Thanksgiving. McMahon today repeated his plea that residents avoid risky behavior in the days ahead.
“Let’s learn from the past 45 days as we enter the rest of the holiday season,’' he wrote on Twitter.
