GREENVILLE, N.C. – Coming off a loss to open the season, the East Carolina women's basketball team will try to bounce back as the Pirates travel to in-state foe High Point for a Friday night battle.
East Carolina (0-1) could not keep up with the deep shooting of Middle Tennessee as the Pirates fell 70-49 in their opener. East Carolina forced 29 Blue Raider turnovers, but Middle Tennessee shot 14-of-28 from three-point range and outscored ECU 36-16 in the first and third quarters.
ECU used its depth against Middle Tennessee, with 12 players playing at least eight minutes and all 12 scored. Taniyah Thompson led the team in scoring with 11 points as well as snagging four steals while Synia Johnson grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Da'Ja Green, Tylar Bennett and Danae McNeal all started their first career games for East Carolina while Iycez Adams and Paige Lyons made their collegiate debuts off the bench. Raven Johnson returned to the court for ECU, having missed nearly two years due to injury. It was the first game for the graduate student since Nov. 17, 2019.
High Point (0-1) started its season with a tight 68-66 loss to Elon, missing a potential game-tying shot at the buzzer. Skylar Curran led the Panthers with 17 points while Jaden Wrightsell scored 16 points. High Point will be the second straight opponent on East Carolina's schedule that appeared in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, as the Panthers won the Big South Regular Season and Tournament Championships a season ago. High Point was picked again as the top team in the Big South in the Preseason Poll and Curran was named the Big South Preseason Player of the Year after averaging 17.7 points last season. Jenson Edwards was also named to the Big South Preseason All-Conference Second-Team after finishing fifth in the league last year in scoring with a total of 14.6 points.
East Carolina holds an all-time record of 9-4 against High Point, but the two North Carolina schools have not played since 2007. Friday's matchup will be the third time the Pirates have played a Big South team since Kim McNeill took charge of the program. East Carolina beat both USC Upstate and Longwood during McNeill's first season on the bench. It will also be the first of three straight games against Big South foes, as the Pirates will host Gardner-Webb and Hampton next week.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., on Friday night in High Point's Qubein Center. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and fans can follow the live stats here.
