The Tampa Bay Buccaneers said "no irregularities" were found with the COVID-19 vaccination card of Antonio Brown after the veteran receiver was accused of acquiring a fake vaccination card before the season. The Buccaneers’ response came after a Tampa Bay Times report that cites allegations that Brown acquired fake vaccination cards for him and his girlfriend.
A former chef of Brown told the Times that the four-time All-Pro allegedly tried to obtain fake vaccination cards from him. Brown didn't, but the chef said at a later date Brown showed him fake cards he obtained.
In a statement Thursday evening, the Buccaneers said all player vaccination cards were reviewed by team personnel and “no irregularities were observed.”
"After an extensive educational process conducted throughout our organization this past offseason highlighting the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccines, we received completed vaccination cards from all Tampa Bay Buccaneers players and submitted the required information to the NFL through the established process in accordance with league policy,” the Buccaneers said in their statement.
Sean Burstyn, an attorney for Brown, told The Athletic on Thursday that Brown is fully vaccinated, and was fully vaccinated at the time he's accused of trying to obtain a fake card. Burstyn said he did not presently have documentation to substantiate what he told The Athletic.
Brown missed the Buccaneers’ Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Rams after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list four days before the game.
A league spokesman told The Athletic on Thursday that the NFL will review the matter.
“We are aware of the report and have been in contact with the club,” the spokesman said.
Clubs are responsible for verifying personnel and player vaccination status. Those individuals have to present their vaccination cards to the club medical staff for verification. No clubs have reported any issues during the verification process.
In league-wide COVID-19 meetings prior to training camp in July, clubs were instructed to scrutinize the cards when presented. Any attempt to use a forged or fake card is a federal criminal offense and will be investigated under the personal conduct policy.
