49ers' Kyle Shanahan on Jalen Hurd: 'We had to move on' - San Francisco Chronicle

Two months ago, the 49ers kept wide receiver Jalen Hurd on their initial 53-man roster, still believing he could finally contribute after they selected him in the third round in 2019.

On Thursday, however, they waived Hurd, who was on injured reserve, with an injury settlement. What changed? Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Hurd’s surgically repaired knee wasn’t improving during the regular season as he continued to have setbacks after tearing his ACL in training camp last year.

“We realized he wasn’t going to come back this year,” Shanahan said. “We were giving him as much time as we could. We all felt very strongly that if he ever could come back how much he could have helped us. But for the third year in a row, just with his (bad luck) with these injuries, how it was healing, we knew it wasn’t going to be this year.”

Hurd missed his rookie season with a back injury. And he was still rehabbing from that injury when he tore his ACL early in last year’s training camp while working on a side field.

“Just going into a fourth year in a row of it would just be too much of a risk for our organization,” Shanahan said. “So we had to move on.”

Rookie will start: Left tackle Trent Williams confirmed what had been widely assumed: rookie Jaylon Moore will start at right tackle on Monday against the Rams.

Moore, a fifth-round pick, will get his second career start with right tackle Mike McGlinchey (quadriceps) out for the season. Moore made his first start at left tackle last month when Williams was sidelined with a sprained ankle, but the 49ers turned to nine-year veteran Tom Compton, 32, after McGlinchey was injured in last Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals.

“He’s young,” Williams said. “He’s a rookie. So he has a ways to go, of course. But he has what it takes. That’s the reason why he’s here. That’s the reason why, even as a fifth-round draft pick, he’s the first tackle off the bench. … We’ve got a lot of faith in Jaylon — by his work and his improvement, he’s instilled that faith in us.”

Moore could see plenty of Pro Bowl pass rusher Von Miller, who was acquired by the Rams in a trade last week. Miller is questionable with an ankle injury. Asked about his reaction to Miller joining the Rams, Williams noted Miller joined a division that includes Cardinals’ All-Pro pass rusher Chandler Jones and the 49ers’ Nick Bosa.

“Of course, no one wants to add him to the division and have to play him twice a year. It’s Von,” Williams said. “Bring all the good pass rushers to the NFC West. Just pray for us.”

Rams lose receiver: A day after the Rams signed Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., they lost Robert Woods, who suffered a torn ACL in practice Friday. Woods, who was on pace for his third 1,000-yard season in the past four years, ranks 20th among NFL wideouts in catches (45) and 21st in yards (556).

The Rams haven’t revealed whether the just-arrived Beckham will play against the 49ers. Shanahan suggested he expected Beckham to play — and now expects him to have a bigger role.

“I’m guessing his reps will go up with that injury happening to Robert,” Shanahan said. “But we’ll have to find out on Monday.”

In 49ers’ injury news, running back JaMycal Hasty (ankle) and cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (ankle) won’t play against the Rams and safety Jimmie Ward (quadriceps), cornerback Josh Norman (ribs) and defensive end Arden Key (oblique) are questionable. With Kirkpatrick sidelined, 49ers rookie cornerbacks Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas will both be active and will join Dontae Johnson as backups.
