ARLINGTON — Andy Dalton was frantically outfitted to enter the game Sunday in the third quarter like a stock car in a pit change. Extra padding was placed around his midsection. A speaker to receive play calls from offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was installed in his helmet.
The Cowboys' backup quarterback had little time to process what transpired with Dak Prescott.
Most others could.
Prescott is expected to miss the rest of the 2020 season with a right ankle fracture and ankle dislocation he suffered midway during the third quarter of a 37-34 win over the New York Giants. A raw, emotional response followed from teammates and coaches, who spoke publicly after the game.
Dalton placed most of his focus on preparing to enter the game. Still, he acknowledged, the Prescott development was jarring. The two have formed a close friendship since beginning to work together in late July.
Dalton, a former long-time starter with the Cincinnati Bengals, signed a one-year contract in May.
“You absolutely hate it for Dak,” Dalton said. "The way that he was playing this year and everything he’s put into it, I hate to see that for him. It’s emotional. You hate that injuries happen in this game, but unfortunately, they’re part of it. I’m definitely praying for him.
“It’s been a lot of fun to be around him since I got here, just to see how he works and prepares. You can see that by the way he was playing this year, so I absolutely hate it for him, and I am definitely praying for him.”
The Cowboys won the game.
And then, they made sure Prescott knew, when doing so, he was in their thoughts.
A number of players reached out to Prescott after the game upon returning to the locker room and regaining access to their cellphones. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, a rookie first-round pick, said he sent Prescott a text message soon after showering.
Lamb was asked what his message was.
“That I appreciate everything he has done for me as far as being a rookie receiver and learning, you know, the offense.” Lamb said.
"He has put in countless [amounts] of time and effort just to helping me get comfortable in this offense, and I can’t thank him enough. …
“We know what is at stake, and I told him we are going to hold it down till we get to see him again on the field with us.”
Right guard Zack Martin is in his seventh NFL season.
This is the fifth with Prescott as his quarterback.
Martin said that he noticed Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, the Cowboys' former head coach, and Giants offensive line coach Marc Colombo, the Cowboys' former O-line coach, standing near Prescott in concern and support when Prescott was receiving attention from the medical staff.
Martin called that gesture “cool to see,” saying it was representative of the person Prescott is and respect he commands.
“It’s devastating,” Martin said of the injury. “He’s the heart and soul of the team. But that’s why Andy is here. He just happened to step up and give us a great chance to go out there and give us a shot to win. Devastated for him, but we’ve got to rally around Andy and try to keep this momentum rolling.”
Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence referenced scripture when discussing Prescott’s injury.
“In the Bible, it says the Lord won’t put you through anything you can’t bear,” Lawrence said. “Dak’s a hell of a player, a hell of a guy. His personality is outstanding … I mean, it’s all high-flying colors with Dak, and there’s really nothing bad you can say about the man. I support him, and this team supports him, and I can’t wait until he gets back.”
