Thirty-nine-year-old Robert Lee Bennett III was charged Thursday with one count of first-degree intentional homicide. A criminal complaint alleges Bennett stabbed his mother, Cindy Bennett, multiple times at her home in Superior's Central Park neighborhood.
Bennett lived with his mother. According to the complaint, the victim's sister told investigators that the victim had been concerned recently about her son's behavior, saying that he had been acting strangely and that she had been trying to convince him to go to the hospital.
On the morning of the stabbing, the sister said she received a call from the victim at about 6:41 a.m. and that she could hear the mother telling her son that he needed to go to a hospital. The sister immediately went to the victim's house and found her lying on the floor in the living room, saying that she did not have a pulse and that there was blood in the room.
Paramedics who arrived a short time later advised officers that the woman was dead and that there was nothing that could be done to revive her.
The complaint reveals that an officer had responded to an earlier call at the home, saying that the defendant had called 911 at about 5 a.m. but was not able to explain to the officer why he called 911. The officer spoke to both the defendant and his adult brother, who also lived in the home, and left when things seemed to be under control.
According to the complaint, defendant's mother was at work at the time of the original 911 call. The defendant's brother says he texted their mother, who said she would come home and try to get him to go to the hospital.
During an interview with an investigator, the defendant allegedly said his mother had been acting "un-normal" and that he did not like that she wanted to take him to the hospital. The complaint says the defendant eventually admitted to killing his mother during the interview.
Bail was set at $1 million cash at an initial appearance Thursday. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Oct. 7.
