California has had 189,604 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 5,555 deaths as of June 23, according to totals reported by county public health department websites.
Statewide, 6,524 new cases and 60 new deaths were reported. While the seven-day average of daily cases has climbed from 4,010 to 4,435, the seven-day average for daily deaths has dropped to 63.6 to 60.5 since Monday.
Los Angeles County accounts for nearly half of the state’s cases (88,262) and more than half the deaths (3,171). San Bernardino County became the fifth county to surpass 10,000 cases, with 10,010. The other four counties are Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego. The five counties’ combined cases (134,536), account for 70% the state’s 189,604 cases.
Nationwide, Texas had its biggest single-day spike in cases with roughly 5,500 new cases by the end of the day.
Globally, the U.S. still has the highest number of cases (2,292,867) and deaths (120,121) followed by Brazil with 1,106,470 cases and 51,271 deaths.
