MORLEY – She completed her senior seasons in basketball and volleyball and now Morley Stanwood’s Breanna Berry goes to East Lansing to begin college at Michigan State University as one of the newest members of the Spartan rowing team.

But she sure wishes she had her final season of track and field at Morley Stanwood.

All sports seasons were canceled because of COVID-19. Berry was set to be among the top performers for Morley Stanwood’s girls track ream.

“It was kind of a letdown because I was hoping to make another run at state and I didn’t have that opportunity,” Berry said.

Berry has been a weight thrower for Mohawks with the shot put being her best event.

She had a season record in 2019 of 35-1/2 at the Mitchell Creek Sport of Champs. She had a throw of 34-7 in the regional to qualify for the state meet.

Berry had a personal record of 96-8 last season.

But she came into 2019 with some clear goals in the shot put.

“Definitely I wanted to make it to the state meet and beat my PR,” Berry said.

To have success in the shot put, the key “is probably confidence, and moving across the ring quick,” Berry said.

Her goal for the discus was to surpass her personal record.

“Again, you have to have confidence and move across the ring quick,” Berry said.

This would have marked Berry’s fourth varsity season in track. She indicated she got better every year.

If there had been a season, “I think we would have had a good team,” Berry said. “We had a lot of seniors who were back and sophomores as well.”

Berry also ran the 400 and 800 relays.

“I think we could have been conference champs in our 800 relay,” Berry said.
